The former head of the Central Government Liaison Office in Macau, Li Gang, is being probed over “serious disciplinary violations” announced by the National People’s Congress (NPC) in Beijing on Friday.

According to the Teledifusão de Macau (TDM), the local television network, the NPC, said that Li Gang has been stripped of his position as a member of the NPC as he is suspected of “seriously violating discipline” an official euphemism for corruption.

Li has been relieved of his duties as deputy director of the State Council’s Overseas Chinese Affairs Office earlier this week.

He served in Hong Kong for almost 10 years as deputy head of Beijing’s Office, before taking over as director of the Macau Liaison Office between 2012 and 2016.

When Li Gang was moved out of his position in July last year, a senior mainland official at the Macau office said the decision was not because of any wrongdoing or dissatisfaction over his performance.
