The ashes of late Liaison Office of the People’s Central Government in Macau Director Zheng Xiaosong were interred at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing on Saturday, the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council said in a statement.
According to the statement, Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Director Zhang Xiaoming, Deputy Director Huang Liuquan and other staff members of the Beijing-based office attended the interment ceremony.
The statement said that the interment took place on Saturday morning. According to the statement, Zhang conveyed the condolences of the central leadership to Zheng’s bereaved family during the ceremony.
The Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery is Beijing’s main resting place for the nation’s highest-ranking revolutionary heroes, senior government officials and individuals deemed of major importance due to their contributions to society.
Zhen died in Macau on October 20, aged 59.
The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office said in a statement on October 21 that Zheng fell to his death – “because he was suffering from depression” – from the building where he lived.
In a statement on October 28, the Liaison Office praised Zheng for his honesty and fruitful work. It also pointed out that Zheng was an “outstanding” member of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the party’s 19th Central Committee.
The statement underlined that Zheng worked in various fields and places such as diplomacy and finance, in Fujian, Hong Kong and Macau.
“He had a strong sense of professionalism and responsibility, was devoted to his duties, dared to take responsibility, adhered to principles, had integrity and was honest, and did a lot of fruitful work in different positions,” the statement said.
The statement stressed that after his posting to Macau in September 2017, Zheng made positive contributions to the cause of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, actively planned the long-term development of Macau and earnestly implemented the Macau Basic Law.
The statement said that Zheng worked selflessly despite battling illness, adding that “his unfortunate death has deeply saddened” his comrades at the Liaison Office.
The director of the Liaison Office is the highest-ranking central government official posted to Macau. Zheng’s successor is slated to be appointed by the central government in due course
