Macau, China, 22 May – Portugal’s last governor of  Macau, Lt. Gen. Vasco Rocha Vieira will pay a visit to China on June 14-24, including a trip to Macau on June 14-17, the Portuguese wire service Lusa reported Thursday.

According to the report, the 69-year-old retired general, have been invited by the Chinese authorities.

It will be Gen. Vieira’s first visit to Macau  since he left the city early hours of December 20, 1999, coinciding with the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) on the day.

In 2000, Gen Vieira was embroiled in an embarrassing scandal over his decision to transfer 50 million patacas ( US$ 6.25 million) in local government funds to a private foundation in Lisbon that he planned to chair.

The money was never returned to Macau and Gen. Vieira did not take up the presidency of the Jorge Alvares Foundation in Lisbon.

According to The Macao Post Daily ” The transfer reportedly took place against the strong opposition of Portugal’s president at that time, Jorge Sampaio” to whom Gen. Vieira was directly answerable” ..

According to the report, which quoted an unnamed oficial source, Gen. Vieira will also visit Beijing and Xinjiang during his tour.
