Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On acknowledged in his New Year’s message on Tuesday that his government still needed to improve its governance.

The Government Information Bureau (GCS) released Chui’s message  to mark New Year’s Day.

Chui said in the message that the local economy and civil society had developed steadily last year.

He also said that citizens’ well-being would continue to be his government’s greatest concern this year.

Chui also said in the message that the key work of his government this year would be to further improve citizens’ livelihood while the economy develops.

He pledged that his government will come up with long-term plans for various areas, including social security, public health and medical care, education, housing, traffic and environmental protection, to improve citizens’ livelihood.

He also promised that the government will set up an effective long-term system to train more professionals.

Chui admitted in the message that his government was fully aware of the existence of civil society’s different problems and demands and that the government still needed to improve its governance.

Chui also said that his government would further deepen exchanges and co-operation with the mainland in different areas and continue to diversify the city’s economic structure and improve the city’s competiveness.

Meanwhile, Bai Zhijian – Beijing’s top representative in Macau – said in his New Year’s message  that Macau had a unique role in the development of the nation and, thus, he was certain that Macau is headed towards a brilliant period in its growth as the local government and residents seize the opportunities and take part in the nation’s progress this year.

Bai, who has been director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in Macau since 2002, also said in the message that the office would continue to work with local residents for the stability and prosperity of the city.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry Commissioner in Macau Hu Zhengyue said in his New Year’s message  that the commission will continue to actively assist the local government in expanding its overseas exchanges and co-operation.

Hu also said his commission would further engage with the local community and do its best to maintain the city’s stability and prosperity.

Meanwhile, according to Xinhua, President Xi Jinping said during a New Year gathering with members of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC)  that the central government would continue to adhere to the principles of “One Country, Two Systems”, “Hong Kong People Ruling Hong Kong” and “Macau People Ruling Macau”.

He also pledged that the central government would continue to maintain Hong Kong and Macau’s stability and prosperity.

The president also wished all Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan compatriots and overseas Chinese a Happy New Year.(macaunews)
