Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On pledged Tuesday that his government will give the public an explanation of the problems listed in a hard-hitting report by the Commission of Audit about the public University of Macau (UM) earlier this week.

He made the promise before attending the annual Chinese New Year reception hosted by the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau at Macau Tower.

Asked by reporters about the report, Chui said that he had looked at the report released by the commission on Monday, adding that he had discussed it with Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng who oversees the city’s education sector.

Chui also said the government would analyse a report to be submitted by the university at the request by Tam, adding that the government would also assess the university’s charter and regulations.

“After analysing them…then the government will give the public an explanation,” Chui said, adding that the government fully supports the development of the city’s tertiary educational institutions.

The commission said in its report that the university was wasting public funds concerning the allocation of its staff quarters. It also slammed the university for the setting-up of a research institute and a foundation under its name and with full public funding even though the university has no legal relationship with either.(macaunews/macaupost)
