Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng has expressed four hopes for Macao’s young people.

Ho was speaking at a symposium hosted by the Macao Youth Federation (MYF) and Macao General Association of Chinese Students (AECM) at the Macao Science Centre in NAPE.

Ho underlined that Macao is undergoing a critical period of historical development. Considering the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Macao’s society and economy, Ho reminded young people that the situation is still severe and complicated.

However, Ho underlined that the setting-up of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin have together brought unprecedented historical opportunities for Macao, its young people in particular.

Within this context, Ho expressed four hopes for Macao’s youth which included “distinguishing between right and wrong, and inheriting the core values of patriotism and love for Macao; Striving for self-improvement and comprehensively improve you own competitiveness; Adhering to virtue as a human being and establishing a correct outlook on life and values and grasp the opportunities of the times and actively integrate yourself into the overall situation of national development.”

Fu Ziying, director of the Central People’s Government Liaison Office in the Macao Special Administrative Region, also addressed the symposium. Fu, the central government’s top official posted to Macao, offered Macao’s young people three insights:  “Taking history as a guide, we are determined to inherit the spirit of patriotism. Young people can draw their spiritual strength from history, forever passing on the excellent tradition of patriotism and love for Macao; Forging ahead and taking on the heavy responsibilities during the era of national rejuvenation. We must be firm practitioners of the One Country, Two Systems principle, courageous explorers who integrate themselves into the development of our country, and faithful guardians of harmony and stability and lastly pursuing progress and aspiring to become pillars of talent. We must achieve our dreams with hard work, create the future with our skills, and gather strength through our sentiments.”

The symposium was chaired by Alvis Lo Iek Long, chairman of the Macao Youth Federation and the director of the Health Bureau, The Macau Post Daily reported.
