Guinea-Bissau’s infrastructure minister died in Macau Thursday, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said.

According to a PJ statement, a colleague of Rui Gomes de Araujo went to the latter’s room at the Venetian resort in Cotai Thursday morning where he found him unconscious in bed. Gomes de Araujo was rushed to the public Conde de S. Januario Hospital Centre where he was pronounced dead.

According to the statement, no foul play is suspected.

Portuguese media reports said the 61-year-old minister had arrived in Macau earlier this week to attend the 5Th International Infrastructure Investment & Construction Forum (IIICF) at the Venetian.

A Portuguese wire service quoted an advisor to the minister as saying that the latter’s death was a “big surprise” since he was not known to have suffered from any illness.

Guinea-Bissau regained its independence from Portugal in 1974 after a protracted war of liberation.

The impoverished west African country is a member of the Macau-based Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries.(macaunews/macaupost)
