Thirty-eight people from Macao have been appointed as members of the upcoming 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), one more than in the current committee.
Among the 38 members, 22 are newcomers, while the remaining 16 have been reappointed.
The 2,172-strong CPPCC National Committee is the central government’s top national advisory body, and draws its members from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
The new five-year term of the CPPCC National Committee will start in March.
The 38 CPPCC National Committee members from Macao comprise 29 members drawn from society as a whole and nine members who belong to other sectors such as business, education, journalism and publication, health and social services
The Macao Special Administrative Region’s (MSAR) first chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, a vice-chairman of the committee, is among the reappointed members.
The 22 newly appointed members from Macao include Health Bureau Director Alvis Lo Iek Long, and Ho Hoi Kei, the daughter of Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng.
The 22 newly appointed members also include six Macao lawmakers – Iau Teng Pio (appointed), Ip Sio Kai (indirectly-elected), Kou Kam Fai (appointed), Lam Lon Wai (indirectly-elected), Wang Sai Man (indirectly-elected) and Wong Kit Cheng (directly-elected).
The 22 newly appointed members also include Macao Institute for Tourism Studies President Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan, businessman Frederico Ma Chi Ngai, and Huang Liuquan, a deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government.
The newcomers also include two media workers, Lo Song Man, a senior executive of public broadcaster TDM, and Choi Chi Tou, the chief editor of local Chinese-language daily Macao Daily News.
The remaining nine new members are Chan Wa Keong, Chen Ji Min, Choy Meng Vai, Francisco Ho Ka Lon, Lee Chong Cheng, Li Pengbin, Mok Chi Wai, Ng Si Fong and Un Kin Kuan.
Prominent property developer Sio Tak Hong, who is one of the defendants in a graft trial, was not reappointed to the CPPCC National Committee.
In addition to Edmund Ho, the 16 members who were reappointed include prominent businessman and former lawmaker Chan Meng Kam, as well as lawyer and former legislator Leonel Alves.
Other reappointees include businessman Chui Sai Cheong, who is the vice-president of the Macao Legislative Assembly and the elder brother of former chief executive Fernando Chui Sai On, Macao Foundation President Wu Zhiliang, indirectly-elected lawmaker Alan Ho Ion Sang, gaming executive Lawrence Ho Yau Lung and O Lam, a vice-president of the Municipal Affairs Bureau, The Macau Post Daily reported.
