Hackers from Hong Kong and the US have attacked e-mail addresses of a local telecom operator’s clients, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said  after initial findings from an investigation into an alleged cyber-attack incident.

The PJ statement said that a local telecom operator reported on Friday an alleged cyber-attack on 34 of its clients’ e-mail addresses. No losses have been identified yet.

The statement said that since hacking is a criminal offence, the police decided to formally launch an investigation .

According to information provided so far, police found that the hackers’ IP addresses are from Hong Kong and the US.

The police have meanwhile notified the Telecommunications Regulation Bureau (DSRT) to assist the affected clients. The statement did not reveal the company’s name but said that it would announce to the public the necessary information legally allowed.

The statement also urged the public to be aware of network security and users’ privacy protection, adding that citizens should immediately notify their telecom operator or the police if they find anything suspicious while they are using the Internet.(macaunews)
