Macau and Guangdong police jointly cracked a crime syndicate, that had reportedly collected over RMB 100 billion in illegal soccer bets, and arrested the top leaders of the group active on both the mainland and in Macau.
According to The Macau Daily times the Macau Judiciary Police (PJ) announced Sunday the details of the illegal soccer-betting rings one of the biggest uncovered in recent years.
PJ said that over 120 people were arrested in the major cross-boundary enforcement action. Most of them are believed to have been nabbed in mainland China.
However, the leader of the crime syndicate was hiding in Macau.
PJ successfully tracked the person’s whereabouts and informed the mainland police, who arrested the ringleader late last month when the person in question was leaving Macau for Zhuhai.
The police revealed that both law enforcement teams were operating under the cross-boundary law-enforcement cooperation mechanism established to combat increasing cross-boundary crimes.
Guangzhou police discovered the case when investigating an illegal online football betting group operating in the region.
Mainland officers raided underground betting shops across China and the head of the syndicate fled to Macau following the raids.(macaunews)
