The government’s Energy Sector Development Office (GDSE) said Wednesday that it has completed drafting a by-law regulating the installation of photovoltaic facilities to generate electricity and that it expected the by-law to be promulgated later this year
According to The Macau Post Daily, GDSE Director Arnaldo Ernesto dos Santos made the remarks to the media on the sidelines of a seminar, which was organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Macau (IEEE Macau). The seminar, held at the Macau Science Centre in Nape, discussed the use of solar power for a greener community.
According to Wikipedia, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic power generation employs solar panels composed of a number of solar cells containing photovoltaic material.
Santos said that the draft was completed but there were still some legal procedures that needed to be completed before its promulgation.
“We’ll do our best to put it into effect this year. The by-law is mainly about technical aspects regarding the installation of photovoltaic facilities to generate electricity. I hope that once the by-law is enacted locals will be encouraged to install the panels,” Santos said, adding that the office was also studying possible measures to encourage residents and enterprises in the city to use solar power, such as through the granting of government subsidies.
Several dozen people including academics, representatives of energy companies and members of several associations such as Macau Association for Promotion of Science and Technology and Association of CEM & SAAM Workers attended the one-day seminar.
CEM and SAAM are the official abbreviations of Macau’s power and water supply utilities.(macaunews)
