Chief Executive (CE) Fernando Chui Sai On said Sunday that his government will urge the city’s six gaming operators to offer croupiers better training to increase their promotion chances.
Chui made the remark on the sidelines of a National Day celebration hosted by the Macau Scout Association at the Workers Sports Complex near the Barrier Gate. He reaffirmed that the government does not intend to change its long-standing policy that categorically bars non-locals from working as croupiers in Macau.
Chui also said the government would come up with ideas to help croupiers get fully prepared to be promoted to mid-level positions in casinos.
“Casinos operate 24 hours a day,” The Macau Post Daily quoted Chui as saying, adding: “The government will do its best to ensure that local residents’ position in the gaming industry will remain unchanged and we hope that gaming operators will support our initiative.”
Meanwhile, Chui also told reporters that his choice of the legislature’s seven appointed lawmakers was based on their community involvement and services and how they could benefit civil society. He pointed out that many civic leaders in Macau are engaged in a raft of social and community services and said he believed that they were the perfect candidates. He declined to reveal any of his choices.
Informed sources said last night that the seven appointments will be gazetted today.
The new term of the Legislative Assembly is slated to start on Tuesday next week.
The new legislature, following the September 15 direct and indirect elections, has 33 members, four more than four years ago.
Apart from the seven appointed lawmakers, whose number has remained unchanged, there are 14 directly- and 12 indirect-elected legislators, two more each.(macaunews)
