The Office of the Government Spokesperson announced Wednesday that the government has donated 100 million patacas to the Yunnan earthquake relief effort.

The temblor struck the province’s Zhaotong prefecture on Sunday.

The statement said that Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On informed the central government about the decision, saying the government would continue to provide all the necessary help and support to Yunnan.

Meanwhile, Macau Red Cross Chairman Eddie Wong Yue Kai said yesterday evening at the society’s headquarters in Nape that three Macau Red Cross staffers had gone to Longtoushan township in Ludian county, one of the earthquake’s most affected areas.

Wong said that since not all the roads are open, only 76 of the 400 relief packages from Macau have been delivered to Longtoushan, while the remaining packages are being kept by Red Cross personnel in Zhaotong. Wong said he hoped that they can be given to victims as early as today.

In addition, the Macau Red Cross announced that as of yesterday evening, it had received 5,406,300 patacas in donations.(macaunews/macaupost)
