The 2ndStanding Committee of the Legislative Assembly met on Monday to review the government’s bill to reform the city’s tertiary education system, but its members found many of the points laid out in the bill to be unclear and said that they would require further clarification from the government.
It was the committee’s first meeting to discuss the bill.
The government submitted the bill in February, after years of publicconsultations and discussions. The bill aims to update the city’stertiary education system to bring it in line with international standards, such as the introduction of double degrees, a coursecredit system and the establishment of an education board.
Committee President Andrew Chan Chak Mo spoke to reporters after the meeting and said that many of the points outlined in the bill were ambiguous, or simply too vague, therefore further meetings with the government were required.
Chan also said the committee’s legal advisors suggested that the lawmakers should look at other countries and regions wherecourse credit systems are used so that they could gain a better understanding of how best to implement the system in Macau.
Regarding Macau’s current regulatory framework concerning the tertiary education system, Chan said there was no need to amend it.
However, Chan said he would welcome better communication between the Legislative Assembly and the regulatory bodies on the matter. (macaunews/macaupost)
