The Macau Red Cross and two local associations Monday donated nearly 800,000 patacas for the victims of Sunday’s earthquake in Zhaotong prefecture in the north-east of Yunnan province.

Meanwhile, the office of Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On said in a statement  that Chui expressed his condolences to the victims’ families on behalf of the government and local residents, vowing that the government would do what it could to support the disaster area’s rescue operations and assist its residents.

The Macau Red Cross said in a statement yesterday that it has already remitted 300,000 yuan (about 387,450 patacas) to its counterpart in Yunnan. According to the statement, two Macau Red Cross staffers have flown to the disaster area to evaluate the situation.

Meanwhile, representatives from two associations – the Macau Chamber of Commerce (ACM) and Macau General Union of Neighbourhood Associations (Kai Fong) went to the headquarters of Macau Red Cross in Nape yesterday to hand in cheques to the organisation.

While the ACM donated a total of 300,000 patacas, Kai Fong donated 100,000 patacas.(macaunews/macaupost)
