Wang Yu-chi, who heads Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), said Tuesday that his meeting with Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On earlier in the day was “very meaningful”.
This was the first time that an MAC head met a Macau chief executive, The Macau Post Daily points out.
Wang also said that such a meeting could only have a positive impact not only on the ties between Macau and Taiwan but also on Hong Kong-Taiwan relations, as well as the island’s relationship with the mainland.
Wang made the remarks on the sidelines of a visit to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Nape.
According to a MAC statement, Wang flew into Macau Tuesday for a two-day working visit and had a meeting with Chui at Government House.
Taking to reporters in the office, Wang, who took over the position in September last year, said that many things had been discussed during the meeting with Chui including the development of bilateral ties including education, tourism and trade.
“We [Wang and Chui] both agreed that the relationship between Macau and Taiwan has developed over the past few years,” Wang said, adding that during the meeting he and Chui referred to each other by their formal titles.
“This was the first time that an MAC chief had a meeting with a [Macau Special Administrative Region] chief executive… it was very meaningful… and positive,” Wang said, adding that the meeting could only have a positive impact on Hong Kong-Taiwan ties and Taiwan-mainland relation.
Wang also vowed that the Taiwan authorities would further improve interaction and exchanges with Macau, Hong Kong and the mainland.
Chui said that he had discussed several issues including tertiary education during his meeting with Wang, according a statement released by Chui’s office.
The statement also said Chui believed that people from Macau and Taiwan would further improve communication, adding that co-operation between the two sides would be further developed.(macaunews)
