China’s top lawmaker, National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo, will arrive in Macau on Wednesday for a three-day visit to mark the 20th anniversary of the Macau Basic Law.
According to a statement by the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), Wu will attend the Macau Basic Law commemorative activities on Thursday at the invitation of Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On.
The Macau Basic Law, which was promulgated on March 31, 1993, took effect on December 20, 1999 when the central government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macau. The Basic Law is the cornerstone of Macau’s political, legal, socio-economic and judicial systems.
According to the GCS statement, Wu will arrive at noon on Wednesday. The government will offer a banquet at the Macau Dome in Cotai on Wednesday night.
Thursday’s programme also includes the inauguration of a Macau Basic Law pavilion and the launch of a book on the city’s highest law.
On Thursday, Wu will also attend a reception marking the 100th anniversary of the Macau Chamber of Commerce (ACM). He will leave Macau on Friday afternoon.
Informed sources have told The Macau Post Daily that Wu will visit the Macau University (UM) campus construction site on Hengqin Island on Wednesday afternoon. The about one square kilometre site will come under the jurisdiction of Macau once the public university starts operating there.
Wu is ranked second among the nation’s state and party leaders. He is both chairman and party secretary of the NPC Standing Committee.
The 71-year old Anhui native is slated to retire from his state and party posts next month.
Wu, an electrical engineer by profession, is a former Shanghai party chief and vice-premier of the central government. He became a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) – the nation’s top political entity – in 2002.
It will be Wu’s first visit to Macau.(macaunews)
