Construction workers are currently assembling an energy transmission line between Vilanculos and Maputo in Mozambique, which will allow over 1.5 million new connections in the provinces of Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo.
National Society for Energy Transport (STE), which is fully owned by Electricidade de Moçambique, will manage the 563-kilometre power transmission line.
According to STE’s executive director, Adriano Jonas, the investment is estimated at around US$400 million and is expected to be operational in 2026.
The STE Phase 1 project, which will connect Maputo and the district of Vilanculos in Inhambane at 400 kV, is the first stage for the interconnection between the Central–North and South Transport Systems, and should be complemented by Phase 2 which will interconnect Inhambane and Tete in conjunction with the 400 MW Temane Thermal Power Plant project, which is considered vital for the viability of the project.
Linked to the Temane–Maputo line, three new substations will be built in Vilanculos (Inhambane), Chibuto (Gaza) and Matalane (Maputo Province), which will boost the supply of energy in those regions and expand the electricity access base.
STE will also manage the Tete-Maputo power transmission line, which will be built to distribute the electricity that will be produced in the Zambezi valley, once the Mphanda Nkuwa dam is constructed.
