Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, has asked China to fund the reconstruction of National Road No 1 and the construction of the new Assembly of the Republic.
Nyusi put forward his request during a meeting with Yang Jiechi, director of the Foreign Affairs Committee from the Central Committee of the China’s Communist Party.
“The President spoke of the need to support the rehabilitation of National Road No 1, which connects our country from south to north,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Verónica Macamo.
Nyusi also requested Chinese funding for the construction of the Assembly of the Republic headquarters, added Macamo.
During the meeting Nyusi praised the “leadership” of the President of China, Xi Jinping, in strengthening relations of cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
The Mozambican authorities estimate rebuilding the highway will cost US$750 million.
The planned Assembly of the Republic will be a parliamentary city area on the north bank of Maputo Bay, with a new hemicycle and apartments for the deputies, most of whom live in rented houses when they travel to the country’s capital for plenary sessions.
In recent years, China has financed a swathe of major public infrastructure in Mozambique, such as the Maputo Circular Road, Zimpeto National Stadium, the bridge between the capital and Catembe and a new Maputo International Airport.
