The University of Macau (UM) welcomed over 3,900 new students yesterday on the first day of its new academic year.
Applications for undergraduate programmes were up by around 20 per cent from last year, with applications from over 35 countries and regions, an increase of around 34 per cent from last year. There are over 1,900 new students enrolled with students from Macao, mainland China, and Portuguese-speaking countries.
UM’s Faculty of Health Sciences has launched the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology programme to support the development of the local healthcare industry and to train more professionals in the area.
Postgraduate programme applications increased by 30 per cent from last year, with over 2,000 new students enrolled. UM also launched three new postgraduate programmes: Master of Science in Global Public Health, Master of Science in Internet of Things, and Master of Science in Cognitive Neuroscience.
The UM also launched the University of Macau Scholarship for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Programmes, with 39 students awarded.
Delivering a welcome speech via video link, Rector Yonghua Song said that UM will support students in all aspects of their development and create an environment beneficial to their personal growth and academic development.
Song added that he hoped new undergraduate students will further improve their knowledge and learning ability, as well as actively participate in group and social activities. He also hoped that new postgraduate students will pursue innovation in their research projects through “taking a problem-oriented approach with interdisciplinary knowledge and methods”, as well as for them to make use of the university’s platforms and resources.
In line with Covid-19 prevention and control measures, all classes will be conducted online until 17 September, after which the teaching mode will be determined based on the pandemic’s situation, The Macau Post Daily reported.
