Tropical Cyclone Signal No 3 will be raised at 4:30 pm today as typhoon Nesat edges closer to Macao, according to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG).
The observatory issued Standby Signal No 1 at 2 pm yesterday and it remains in effect.
Forecasters said that the probability of issuing a Blue Storm Surge warning today and Signal No 8 tomorrow was, however, “relatively low”.
According to the bureau, at 2 pm today Nesat was located about 400 kilometres southeast of Macao, moving towards the coast of Vietnam.
Under the joint impact of Nesat and a northeastern monsoon, the weather will be relatively fine and dry today, while winds over the bridges will occasionally reach Force 6 this morning, as the monsoon is expected to intensify and move southwards.
As Nesat moves closer to Macao, winds will intensify. Cloud cover will increase from tomorrow to Wednesday, with a few showery patches.
The bureau said that the temperature will gradually fall, predicting that on Wednesday the mercury will reach a low of 17 degrees Celsius.
Under strong winds and swells, slight flooding may occur in the southern Inner Harbour area.
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Observatory issued Typhoon Signal No 3 at 11:30 am today.
