Macau’s population fell year on year by 1,900 to 644,900 at the end of last year, namely due to a decrease in the number of imported labour, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced on Monday.
According to the bureau’s 2016 demographic data, females accounted for 52.6 percent of the population. Seniors – those aged 65 and over – accounted for 9.8 percent of the population. The elderly population rose by 0.8 percent year on year.
A total of 7,146 live births were delivered last year, 91 more than in the previous year. The birth rate remained unchanged at 11 percent.
The sex ratio of newborns stood at 109.4, corresponding to 109.4 male babies per 100 female babies.
The number of non-resident workers (imported labour) stood at 177,638 at end of last year, down by 4,008 year on year. Non-resident workers employed by the construction sector dropped significantly by 8,868, or 20.4 percent, year on year.
A total of 6,327 mainlanders were granted local residence permits last year, down by 2,141 year on year, with 4,876 from Guangdong province.
A total of 1,290 mainlanders were repatriated for staying illegally in Macau last year, down by 488 year-on-year.
Based on Macau’s land area of 30.4 square kilometres, its population density stood at 21,214 per square kilometre at the end of last year.
