Addressing Wednesday’s Q&A session in the legislature, Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On encouraged young people to broaden their horizons and develop an international perspective.
Responding to lawmaker-cum-developer Lau Veng Seng’s question on talent development and how the government has been providing young people with opportunities and helped them develop an international perspective, Chui said the choice ultimately depended on young people’s willingness to look further.
“The government can only provide opportunities but it is ultimately up to young people in Macau to take advantage of such opportunities and broaden their horizons,” he said.
“Young people are having a stable and easy life. This stability may have caused two negative consequences, one being that young people do not want to compete and the other being that young people cannot compete,” Chui said.
The chief executive also said that young people should be less fearful of competition and be more willing to learn.
Chui also said that sometimes Macau’s young people had not been very interested in such opportunities, adding that the government needed to find new ways to “stimulate” them.
In concluding his response to Lau’s question, Chui stressed the importance of gaining an international perspective and urged young people to be more enthusiastic to learn new things in order to advance their talents and skills.
