Due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, Macau’s number of visitor arrivals dropped 16.8 per cent year-on-year to 2.85 million in January, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) said on Friday.
According to a DSEC statement, same-day visitors (1.53 million) and overnight visitors (1.32 million) decreased by 14.2 per cent and 19.6 per cent, respectively.
Visitors’ average length of stay remained unchanged year-on-year at 1.2 days. Overnight visitors’ average length of stay rose slightly to 2.3 days.
Mainland Chinese visitors dropped 14.9 per cent to 2.13 million. The number of Hong Kong visitors fell 10.8 per cent to 476,032, while Taiwan visitors decreased 19.0 per cent to 70,382. Visitors from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan accounted for 93.9 per cent of all visitor arrivals last month.
Visitors from the mainland’s nine Greater Bay Area (GBA) cities rose 10.9 per cent to 1.14 million.
South Korea continued to be Macau’s number-one source of foreign visitor arrivals. However, their number declined 56.6 per cent to 43,129.
In January, Macau received 11,623 visitors from the US, 7,052 from Australia, 4,925 from Canada and 3,132 from the UK – all of them down by more than 20 per cent, according to the DSEC statement.
Some 10.9 percent of last month’s visitors arrived by air.
