A reunion of the Macanese diaspora will take place in Macao at the end of next year.

Jornal Tribuna de Macau reports that the event will take place from 30 November to 6 December 2024, and will give an opportunity for Macanese who have emigrated abroad to reconnect with Macao and the local Macanese community.

The gatherings, known simply as Encontros after the Portuguese word for “meetings,” have traditionally taken place every three years. The Encontro scheduled for 2022 was cancelled because of Covid-19 pandemic travel restrictions, meaning that the 2024 iteration will be the first since 2019.

The 2019 Encontro drew more than 1,300 participants, Tribuna reports, including over 970 from overseas.

José Luís de Sales Marques, president of the permanent council of the Macanese Communities Council, told the newspaper that the event “can obviously be held thanks to very generous support from the Macau Foundation of the Macao government, to whom we are very grateful.”

He said that organisers would now work on a programme for the Encontro, which in previous years has included dinners, tours, and cultural workshops.
