The Macau government announced the city’s 19th confirmed COVID-19 case Sunday, a 19-year-old male studying in the United States who is the son of the 18th case. They arrived in Macau from New York via Hong Kong on Saturday.
According to a statement by the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre, he travelled with his mother (18th case) and two other siblings by Cathay Pacific flight CX845. They departed from Kennedy International Airport in New York on March 20 and arrived at the Hong Kong International Airport on Saturday.
After arriving in Hong Kong, they took the Tourism Crisis Management Office chartered bus and passed the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, entering Macau.
The patient had been to Mexico from March 8 to 14, and had no significant respiratory symptoms in the United States up until March 18.
The patient was given a nucleic acid test because his mother was positive for the new coronavirus and he was listed as a close contact.
He was admitted to the isolation ward of the Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre and was hospitalised without any symptoms.
The other two siblings were negative for the first test and have been placed in isolation at Conde de S. Januário Hospital Centre. They will be tested again after 48 hours.
The Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre is calling on residents who were on the same flight as the confirmed patients to call 2870 0800 for further processing.
Nine cases, all of them imported, have been confirmed since last Sunday (March 15). Macau’s first novel coronavirus case was diagnosed on January 22.
