The Health Bureau (SSM) has announced Macao’s first flu death this year – an 83-year-old male local resident who died on Thursday.
The octogenarian patient, who had suffered from some chronic diseases like hypertension, came down with fever and vomiting last Sunday, and the following day he tested positive for the Influenza A virus (IAV) at the emergency department of the public Conde de S. Januario Hospital Centre and was prescribed Tamiflu, according to SSM.
As his conditions deteriorated, he was admitted to the public hospital on Tuesday and was diagnosed with pneumonia and a bacterial infection. The patient, who did not receive the 2021-22 seasonal flu shot, passed away on Thursday, the bureau pointed out.
Meanwhile, two other men who shared a room with him in a retirement home have also been diagnosed with IAV.
Since the beginning of the year, SSM has confirmed 10 influenza cases with pneumonia, nine of which were ”serious”, including the only fatality so far, The Macau Post Daily reported.
