The public Ka Ho Rehabilitation Hospital in Coloane came into operation Monday, providing up to 188 beds primarily for senior citizens receiving rehabilitation or palliative treatment.

Accompanied by Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On inaugurated the hospital, which is jointly run by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre and the Macau Federation of Trade Unions (commonly known as Gung Luen). The beds run by the trade union are for rehabilitation treatment while the beds run by the public hospital are for palliative treatment.

The hospital is located near the oil depot in Ka Ho on the north-eastern shore of Coloane.

The construction of the hospital started in July 2015 and was completed in May last year. The hospital construction cost 260 million patacas, according to the government.

Delivering a speech during the inauguration ceremony, Tam said that the city’s latest hospital comprises three sections: 1) a physiotherapy area run by the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre; 2) rehabilitation wards also run by the public hospital; and 3) rehabilitation wards run by the Macau Federation of Trade Unions.

According to Tam, the hospital has a total of 188 beds – 88 beds in the public hospital-run rehabilitation wards and 100 beds in the rehabilitation wards run by the city’s main trade union.

According to Tam, the health services provided by the Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre include clinical treatment, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pain management, and psychological counselling, among others.

In a statement, the Health Bureau said that the rehabilitation hospital, which has a gross floor area of 11,124 square metres, is mainly intended for the provision of integrated health services to senior citizens so as to alleviate their conditions, increase their mobility, and improve their self-care skills and quality of life. In addition to rehabilitation of limbs, rehabilitation and palliative treatment are also provided to patients with chronic organ dysfunction, as an extension of the inpatient service of the Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre, the statement said.

During the inauguration ceremony, SSM Deputy Director Kuok Cheong U, who also heads the Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre (CHCSJ), said that 20 beds in the rehabilitation ward area run by the CHCSJ will come into use in the new hospital’s initial stage, adding that the CHCSJ will then gradually transfer more of its patients receiving rehabilitation treatment to the new hospital in Ka Ho based on their conditions and wishes.

The SSM statement said that in the initial stage when the 20 beds come into use first, the CHCSJ will dispatch three general practitioners, 14 nurses and eight assistant nurses to the Ka Ho Rehabilitation Hospital for 24/7 medical services.(Macaunews)
