The Health Bureau (SSM) Tuesday announced three more cases of influenza complicated by pneumonia and other complications, with one of the patients being in critical condition.
According to an SSM statement, the three cases were reported by the public Conde de Sao Januario Hospital Centre and the private Kiang Wu Hospital Tuesday.
The statement warned the public that Macau continues to be affected by a season flu wave. However, the statement insisted that the situation was stable.
The latest case of a flu patient in critical condition is an 80-year-old local resident suffering from various chronic diseases, according to the statement.
The octogenarian was admitted to Kiang Wu Hospital on January 15 due to heart disease. He came down with fever on Sunday and tested positive for Type A influenza on Monday, suffering from double pneumonia.
The patient, who was not vaccinated against 2018-19 seasonal influenza, was transferred to the hospital intensive care unit yesterday due to respiratory insufficiency requiring assisted ventilation.
According to the statement, 43 cases of influenza associated with pneumonia and other complications have been registered since last September, one of them fatal. Of the 43 serious cases, 88.3 percent failed to have their seasonal flu shots. As of yesterday, nine of the flu patients were still hospitalised.
Meanwhile, 26 pupils from three schools – School of the Nations, Santa Maria Mazzarello School and the primary school section of Pui Tou School in Taipa have been diagnosed with influenza, the statement said.
