The Macau government has received 160,000 facemasks from an anonymous donor.
According to a statement by the Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Centre on Monday, the donor requested anonymity. The statement merely referred to the donor as “an enterprise”.
The statement conveyed the government’s gratitude for the donation, pointing out that it helps the government fight the COVID-19 epidemic.
The government has received a large quantity of facemasks and other anti-epidemic materials from individuals and enterprises over the past few weeks, almost all of which chose to publicise their donations.
The government has sold over 20 million facemasks since late January to residents and non-resident workers (migrant workers) at the fixed price of 10 patacas (US$1.25) every 10 days. Facemasks are also sold at market prices by private enterprises.
The sixth round of government-arranged sales will start on Friday. The Macau Health Bureau confirmed the last two of a total of 10 COVID-19 cases on February 4. All the 10 patients – seven tourists from Wuhan and three locals – have meanwhile been discharged from hospital.
Observers have noted that well over 90 per cent of pedestrians in Macau are wearing facemasks which are mandatory to enter public administration premises and bank branches as well as when taking public transport and taxis.
