The local government said in a statement on Monday that it is staying vigilant about the latest developments concerning the Wuhan pneumonia virus situation. In the statement released through the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS), the government reassured the public that it has improved preventive work to minimise the risk of such cases affecting Macau.
Between 5 p.m. on Saturday to 5 p.m. on Sunday there were no reports of any local people returning from recent trips to Wuhan and simultaneously complaining of illness, the statement said.
Since January 1 the government has been informed by local medical institutions about a total of 13 illness cases, each involving a patient with fever and respiratory problems, and who had been in Wuhan in the previous 14 days. Tests confirmed that none of the 13 patients had the Wuhan pneumonia virus, according to the statement.
According to the Macau Post Daily, the local government said that it remains in close contact with the National Health Commission (NHC) regarding the latest news on the viral pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan. The local government “continues to optimise local preparedness regarding its response to the viral outbreak, including measures to prevent it from spreading to Macau.
“In addition, it has set up a contingency plan should there be any local viral outbreak.
“Macau has sufficient stocks of medication and medical consumables – and adequate equipment and facilities – for treating anyone thought to have been infected by the Wuhan pneumonia virus,” the statement said.
In the statement, the government urged members of the public to pay close attention to the latest updates issued by the local authorities regarding the “Wuhan virus” and to follow their infection-control advice, especially in relation to personal and environmental hygiene, such as frequently washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand rub; avoiding touching mouth, nose and eyes before washing hands; regularly cleaning and disinfecting frequently used surfaces at home and in the workplace; while people with low immunity should avoid visiting crowded places.
