Two golden snub-nosed monkeys that arrived in Macau in October have completed their quarantine and are ready to meet the public at Seac Pai Van Park in Coloane from Saturday, Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) announced in a statement Thursday.
According to the statement, the pair is on loan from the mainland’s Qinhuangdao Wildlife Rescue Centre as part of a cooperation arrangement to raise awareness of conservation.
The statement said that the primates – a male and a female – are under 24-hour observation by IACM keepers and after a series of health checks, the monkeys passed all the required evaluation tests and have adapted very well to the food and environment of their enclosure in Seac Pai Van Park.
The statement said that in the wild golden snub-nosed monkeys share the same living space as giant pandas and are classified as endangered species on the Red List of The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Golden snub-nose monkeys are flexible and agile, according to the statement, and they feed on tree leaves and fruit.
The statement said that the golden monkey boy is very active, enthusiastic and loves to eat, while the golden monkey girl is more gentle and shy and always follows the boy.
“They are full of curiosity, they explore anything and everything,” the statement said.
