French film star Brigitte Bardot has written a letter to Chief Executive Fernando Chui Sai On, asking him to save the Canidrome greyhounds to prevent Macau from being identified globally as a “town of suffering” where “innocent animals die running for their life”.
The letter, dated May 15 this year in St Tropez and signed by Bardot writing “with all my heart and all my wishes”, was posted on Facebook by local animal welfare and protection group Anima President Albano Martins.
Her letter follows another one Martins posted earlier that is signed by British band Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May.
In the letter, Bardot says that Macau aims to diversify its industry and become a world capital of modern tourism, yet the city’s dog racetrack is “sadly known in the world as a place of death, where no greyhound gets out alive”.
The former actress and well known animal activist, urged Chui “do not allow the world to identify Macau as a town of suffering, where so many innocent animals die running for their life”.
“I urge you [Chui] to convince the Canidrome to entrust the greyhounds to the care of ANIMA-Society for the Protection of Animals (Macau), so that their safety is ensured and adoptive families can be found for them,” her letter says, asking Chui not to allow the greyhounds to be exported to other Asian countries where no law protects them and where they would be used for illegal betting or be consumed as meat.
