The Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau revealed on Tuesday that between 50 and 70 per cent of the students in Macao’s non-tertiary education institutions in Macao had already contracted the coronavirus as of last week.

Kong Chi Meng told TDM that for the teachers and school staff the percentage of infection could even reach 70 per cent but added that the majority are already fit to work.

“We are convinced that by 9 January when schools reopen students and teachers will be in good condition to start the classes,” said Kong.

The director also said that in some cases teachers who are already fully fit could compensate those who are still sick by working longer hours.

Macao has more than 70 non-tertiary schools with almost 85,00 students.
