An 80-year-old unvaccinated woman who had been suffering from a string of chronic diseases – hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and valvular heart disease – died yesterday at the Health Bureau’s Public Health Clinical Centre in Coloane. The Novel Response and Coordination Centre has registered her death as the city’s seventh Covid fatality.

According to the Centre, the woman was transferred to the community treatment centre at the Macau East Asian Games Dome in Cotai for assessment and treatment yesterday morning after testing positive for Covid-19 in a nucleic acid test (NAT) on Monday.

Upon arrival at the East Asian Games Dome, the woman suffered decreased consciousness and hypoglycaemia. The Centre said that the woman’s condition had improved after treatment, after which she was transferred to the Health Bureau’s Public Health Clinical Centre in Coloane for further treatment.

However, the Centre said, health workers confirmed at 7:20 pm yesterday that the woman was not breathing, and they were unable to detect her heartbeat. Consequently, health workers resuscitated her but she was pronounced dead at 7:54 pm after emergency treatment to save her life had failed.

The Centre has urged senior citizens and those with chronic diseases to get their booster jabs, with the aim of lengthening their vaccination protection against the novel coronavirus.

The sixth Covid-related fatality was reported on 21 July this year, when Macao was hit by its June Covid outbreak which saw six Covid-related fatalities in total, reported The Macau Post Daily.
