The accident and emergency department at the Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST) Hospital was relocated to the ground floor of the newly opened Macao Union Hospital on 21 December, according to an announcement by the Health Bureau.

The unit’s acting head, Chang Tam Fei, told TDM, that staffing levels are “basically the same as before,” with up to three doctors and four nurses available during daylight shifts.

The new emergency department is more spacious and operates on a 24-hour basis. Among the facilities are a pharmacy, clinic and 17 observation beds. A bus station, taxi stand, and parking are situated nearby.

The relocated medical unit is expected to remain a fixture of the Macao Union Hospital until the institution can establish its own emergency department.

Chang noted that the emergency ward does not offer an ambulance service, which means that those who request one will be sent to either Hospital Conde São Januário or Kiang Wu Hospital.

The Macao Union Hospital officially started its trial period on 20 December. It is not expected to begin full operation until September of next year.
