Macao universities continue to jump in QS world rankings

UM lifted its ranking from 254th place in 2023 to 245th place currently, while MUST rose up by 41 places, earning a ranking of 464
  • Both tertiary institutions have also done relatively well in other university rankings, including the recent Times Higher Education Young University Rankings

The University of Macau (UM) and Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) continue their climb up the QS World University Rankings and stand at 245 and 464 respectively in the latest table. 

MUST saw the most gains, jumping 41 places from a ranking of 505 last year. Meanwhile, UM moved up 9 places after earning a spot in 254th place in 2023. According to QS data, both universities have shown notable improvement in recent years. UM’s ranking was listed as 701+ in 2015, while MUST was positioned between 701-750 in 2021. 

The two tertiary institutions have also done relatively well in other rankings, including the recent Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2024, which saw UM and MUST increase their positions to 14th and 38th place respectively. The 2024 edition of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings meanwhile saw UM rise from the 201-to-250 bracket in 2023 to 193rd place.

Overall, there are more than 1,500 universities featured in the QS World University Rankings, which are dominated by 197 US institutions. Mainland China was placed third with 71 universities, falling behind the UK, which had 90 ranked institutions. 

The top three spots went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. 

The QS World University Rankings is considered to be one of the most authoritative listings of its kind, along with the Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the Academic Ranking of World Universities.
