Light Up Macao – the city’s annual festival of illuminations – is scheduled to take place over a three-month period from December 2024 to February 2025, according to an announcement by the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).
Much like previous editions, the event will feature a dazzling array of light installations and light shows set up in different parts of the city.
The MGTO has also launched a competition for light projections, with applications open until 30 August 2024 and prizes of up to 250,000 patacas on offer. Designs should use the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, and the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Macao SAR, as their theme.

Contestants must be Macao residents aged 18 or over. Group entries are permitted, but at least one member is required to be a Macao resident. The winning designs will be projected onto the façade of Cozinha Pinócchio, a Portuguese restaurant in Taipa Village. More information about the competition requirements can be found on the official website.
First inaugurated in 2015, Light Up Macao has become one of the main attractions in the city during the Christmas, Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival holidays. According to the MGTO, the event is intended to help promote tourism in the community and the development of the night economy.
Last year’s iteration featured 36 light installations, as well as 20 other types of displays across 34 locations in the city. During its 86-day run, it attracted over 7 million visitors.
