Businessman Ng Kuok Sao, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison in 2018 for his role in the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) corruption scandal, has been arrested in mainland China where he had been on the run and handed back to the authorities in Macao.

Ng, 49, was tried in absentia after he fled to China and subsequently found guilty of criminal association, forgery of documents and extensive fraud.

The Judiciary Police said that Ng had moved around between various cities in mainland China while trying to evade justice. He was arrested in Zhuhai on Wednesday and is currently detained in Coloane prison.

Ng also faces charges in the second case of the former president of IPIM, Cheong Chou Weng, also known as Jackson Chang.

Sentencing is scheduled for 20 May, local media reported.
