The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has suggested that it will soon make adjustments to rules on bringing pets between Macao and mainland China, the Macau Post Daily reports.

IAM president José Fonseca Tavares mentioned that change was afoot yesterday, when questioned about transporting pets into Hengqin.

While Tavares did not elaborate on what possible changes would be, the government-owned property developer Macau Urban Renewal Limited recently clarified pet rules for residents of Macau New Neighbourhood in Hengqin.

Each Macao resident moving to the development is allowed to bring either one dog or one cat, which must be microchipped.

Chips will be scanned whenever pets cross between Macao and Hengqin. Both dogs and cats must travel with quarantine certificates; dogs also need proof they’ve been vaccinated against rabies.

Macao laws already require all dogs to be microchipped, though this is not the case for cats.

Tavares noted that IAM was liaising with the relevant mainland China authorities regarding pets crossing the border. He said that adjustments to the current policy would be announced in due course.
