All students and staff will need to take a nucleic acid test (NAT) before the start of the new school year.

As most educational facilities restart on 1 September, pupils, teachers and other staff can take their NAT on 29, 30 or 31 August, the Education and Youth Development Bureau announced.

However, in the case of educational institutions that commence classes later, students and staff will have to take a NAT in the three days prior.

According to the most recent statistics, about 130,000 students were enrolled in the previous academic year.

Meanwhile, students, teachers and other staff members must return to Macao at least 10 days before the start of classes. Cross-border students, teachers and other staff members must return to their usual place of residence, namely Zhuhai or Zhongshan, at least 10 days before the start of classes in Macao.

Around 1.8 million travellers crossed the border between 11 and 17 August, an increase of 16.5 per cent compared with the previous week.
