The government is to hand back non-resident employment quotas to small- and medium-sized enterprises which surrendered them during the pandemic.

Andy Wu, a member of the Economic Development Council, said the quotas would be returned within five working days.

“The government set a limit on the percentage, but more than 90 per cent of the quotas can be returned,” he told TDM.

A second council member, Sio Chi Wai, added: “In the process of economic recovery we want to stress that there are a few industries besides SMEs that are related to tourism including retail and food and beverage.

“I believe we will prioritise these industries, and the government will also set a balance prioritising local employment.”
