Hengqin’s urban planning authority is considering running a high-speed train between mainland China and Macao, according to local media reports.

The authority recently put out a call for tenders to assess the feasibility of a high-speed train project, anticipating that the study alone would cost around 6.26 million patacas.

If the Macao section went ahead, it would connect the SAR to Guangzhou’s international airport and at least six other stops by rail.

The seven-to-nine-kilometre Hengqin-Macao railway would reportedly come with a 5.5 billion price yuan tag, and integrate with Macao’s Light Rapid Transit (LRT) system.

A 2.2-kilometre Hengqin-Macao LRT connection is set to be completed in September 2024.

The proposals come amid heavy investments in the regular rail network of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), which can expect to see 4,700 kilometres of track either in use or under construction by 2025.
