The International Institute of Macau (IIM) has launched the book “Pearl River Delta – From World Factory to Global Innovator,” with the aim of analysing the economic future of the Pearl River Delta region of southern China, a rural area that has become a modern industrial metropolis with 60 million inhabitants.
The Pearl River Delta is now the largest urban area in the world by both area and population.
The book written by researchers Thomas Chan and Louise do Rosário explores the economic future of the region and profiles the nine major cities in the Delta and its development and modernisation in China’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) and the “One Belt, One Road” initiative.
The launch comes after the IIM published eight Portuguese books covering the history of the Pearl River Delta, its economic development since 1978 and the investment opportunities in the area along with detailed profiles of nine major cities in the Delta: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Zhaoqing.
Macau is part of the success story of the Pearl River Delta and is increasingly integrated in the economic development of the Delta as a platform for China’s economic relations with Portuguese-speaking countries.
With its increasingly clear role as a bridge, Macau may be an important part in supporting companies and foreign businesspeople, especially from the Portuguese-speaking countries to access the Delta’s market, which is the driver of economic development in China.
According to the book, “with the new bridge soon connecting Hong Kong to Macau and Zhuhai, in 2018, the development of the Delta will have a new momentum that will surely bring benefits for all economic activity in the region.”
The book was produced by media group Macaulink and received the support from the Macau Foundation with its partners being the Macau Pearl River Delta Research Association and the Portugal-China Association of Young Entrepreneurs.
The book is on sale at the Portuguese Bookshop at Rua do Pedro Nolasco for MOP 200.
