Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam Chon Weng said on Thursday that the four-day Wushu Masters Challenge was “widely liked” by residents and tourists alike.
Macau’s first-ever Wushu Masters Challenge, hosted by the Sports Bureau and Wushu General Association of Macau, aims to promote traditional Chinese martial arts to tourists and residents, is being held until Sunday.
The Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion, the venue of the International Taolu Competition, was only half full on Thursday.
The competition was the event’s first programme.
Sports Bureau spokeswoman Sam Mei Kei told The Macau Post Daily that about 7,000 free tickets to the six programmes had already been distributed.
Tam made the remarks on the sidelines of the international event’s opening ceremony that the Wushu Masters Challenge was popular among residents and tourist alike, pointing out that many people attended the opening ceremony, adding that the event could help promote traditional Chinese martial arts.
Asked by reporters why not that many people were watching yesterday’s programme, Tam commented, “Some [residents] might not be interested in martial arts, but the government did put a lot effort into the promotion of the event,” adding that the government would do better next time.
