A number of the biggest names in women’s tennis have been confirmed for Zhuhai’s WTA Elite Trophy tournament, which is taking place at the end of this month, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has announced.

The 12 contestants include Madison Keys from the US, the Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova, and Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko. They are currently ranked no. 11, 13, and 14 in the world, respectively.

Twenty-one-year-old Zheng Qinwen is the home favourite, currently ranked no. 19 in the world. World no. 32 Wang Xinyu, 22, is the wild card entrant.

Previous winners have included US tennis superstar Venus Williams and the current world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, from Belarus.

This will be the invitation-only tournament’s 6th edition and its first year back since a three-year, pandemic-enforced hiatus.
