The Macao women’s football team suffered a heavy defeat against Singapore last night, going down 9-0 in an international friendly at the Lion City’s Jalan Besar Stadium.
The scoreline is a record for Singapore, whose previous biggest victory was a 6-0 rout over the Maldives in 2007, the Straits Times reports.
Macao coach Meng Jun was magnanimous in defeat. “The support from the Singaporean fans for both sides was amazing,” she told the Times. “I hope that in the future, Macao can also have a professional women’s league, and Singapore’s football will also continue growing.”

Prominent among the Singaporean goal scorers was Borussia Dortmund’s Danelle Tan, who notched a hat-trick, and Oakland University’s Putri Syaliza, who found the back of the net twice.
The defeat will be another bitter blow to Macao, ranked a lowly 174th in the world.
The women’s squad suffered a 16-0 bruising against Chinese Taipei last November, followed by a 6-0 drubbing by Guam in the East Asian Football Federation’s Women’s Football Championship. The team has also not scored a goal in international competition since 2014.
