Fireworks makers from 10 different countries are expected to compete in Macao’s 31st International Fireworks Display Contest, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) announced on Monday.

The annual contest, which was on hiatus during the pandemic, will take place from 9 September to 7 October – coinciding with the National Day Holiday.

Each contestant will stage an 18-minute display on one of five evenings: 9, 16 and 23 September, 1 October (National Day) and 7 October. The winner will be revealed during a prize-giving ceremony held after the final two shows.

The competing fireworks companies hail from Australia, Austria, China, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. “All excellent in pyrotechnic artistry,” a statement from MGTO promised.

The office noted that the best viewing points will be from the Kun Iam Ecumenical Centre to the leisure area of the Kun Iam Statue waterfront on Avenida Dr. Sun Yat-Sen; the waterfront at Macao Science Center; Anim’Arte at Nam Van Lake; the Avenida de Sagres (next to Mandarin Oriental, Macau); and the Avenida do Oceano in Taipa.

A Fireworks Carnival will be next to the Macau Tower on each evening of the competition, featuring food, performances and games. There will also be themed markets held at Anim’Arte and the Taipa Waterfront’s Leisure Area.

Macao’s six integrated resorts have partnered with MGTO to host the three-decades-old contest.
