An artistic swimming competition is being held at the Aquatic Centre of the Olympic Sports Centre in Taipa from 23 to 25 June.

Appreciation for artistic swimming (formerly known as synchronised swimming) has surged in recent years as spectators become more aware of the ballet-like poise, remarkable coordination and sheer physical endurance demanded by the sport.

According to a media release, the MGM Artistic Swimming Elite Extravaganza and Macao Open Artistic Swimming Competition 2023 will feature top-tier athletes from China’s National Artistic Swimming Team, the Beijing Artistic Swimming Team, and the Sichuan Artistic Swimming Team.

Shi Haoyu, Yang Shuncheng, and Dai Shiyi, who earlier this month respectively won the mixed duet championship, and men’s and women’s solo free routine championships at the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup, will put on performances during the opening and closing ceremonies.

The event comes as 11 athletes from the Macao Artistic Swimming Team prepare to compete in the World Aquatics Championships in Japan in July, followed by the Asian Games in Hangzhou in September.

The MGM Elite Extravaganza and Macao Artistic Swimming Open 2023 is presented by MGM and organised by the Swimming Association of Macao.
