Macau, China, 4 Dec – Macau´s 159 athletes are taking part in 18 sports of the 5th East Asian Games, including, among others, basketball, swimming, badminton, bowling, indoor cycling and squash.

The 2009 East Asian Games is held in Hong Kong until December 13, with a total of 262 events in a record 22 sports (including 16 Olympic sports) and nine participating countries and regions, comprising host city Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Mongolia and the US territory of Guam.

With some 2,300 athletes, the event is the largest international multi-sport event ever held in Hong Kong.

While the opening ceremony of the 5th East Asian Games will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Saturday, a string of competitions have already been held since Wednesday, with Macau’s men’s and women’s table tennis teams defeated by China and Taiwan.
Macau also lost in basketball (men) against Taiwan, in snooker (men) against Hong Kong and South Korea and in Volley (men) against South Korea.

Macau hosted the 4th East Asian Games in 2005, placing fifth on the final medal tally after mainland China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, with 11 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals. Hong Kong came seventh with two gold, two silver and nine bronze medals.
